I’ve never been great with figures so I always ignored motor vehicles with the 4×4 tag as not for me. That was just before I had the opportunity to go on an adventure holiday with chums. My friend’s husband said they’d be fetching me in the ‘truck’, and not having seen it previously, I presumed that I would have to put up with the long trip to our destination in a big noisy box on tires with hard uncomfortable seats. Imagine my surprise when they drew up in a snazzy-looking 4-wheel-drive SUV. This was no ‘truck’ in the conventional sense of the word. The cab was surprisingly luxurious on the inside, with comfy well-sprung seat designs and plenty of inside room. Even though we picked up the rest of our group of happy travelers together with their massive carriers of padkos, and had been on the road for some hours, it didn’t seem crowded whatsoever.
Now, I’m rather short so I struggled to clamber into the 4×4 at first, until the driver pointed out a clever foothold set into the running board specifically to assist vertically challenged people like me. That I cannot readily get into elevated vehicles has always been a bone of contention with me so I was thrilled to strike this reservation off my list, and when I had mastered the art of stepping into and out of the cab, I found I rather enjoyed being way up high. The point of view from the cab was magnificent and great for sightseeing when we reached the national game park that was our destination. All my past visits to game parks had been in vehicles that sat much nearer to the road surface, so I really noticed the difference in my game viewing encounter on this occasion.
We suffered several day’s rainy weather conditions in the course of our holiday but it didn’t interfere with our activity much. The 4×4 dealt with the muddy and slick conditions well because of the equal distribution of power to all four wheels, and I have to admit, I felt very secure. My friend’s husband joked about how the sense of secureness was what had endeared his vehicle to her and that she put up with it taking up the whole garage due to this. On a more solemn note, he added that it was easy to get complacent in such a secure-feeling vehicle and that he had to make certain he didn’t take any chances on the streets. I also found that 4x4s are suited to both on and off road purposes because they possess a switch that allows them to be changed from 4WD to 2WD.
After I returned from my holiday and had to enter rush hour traffic again, the real difference between being in a big 4×4 versus my usual little car was evident to me. I could no longer see far in front ahead the way I had been able to in the 4WD vehicle. It was frustrating not to have the ability to see what was creating the traffic jam up in front. Then later, when i was overtaking a sluggish vehicle, a minibus taxi pulled up on my right and attempted to drive past. I tried to accelerate but there was not adequate strength under the bonnet of my vehicle to put the taxi behind me and I was forced to endure its indignant hooting from the rear. Come Christmas time, I’ll be asking Father Christmas to send me a 4×4.
